Signature Cocktails for Your Next Event or Wedding

Be a master of mixology: My guide to stirring and shaking the signature cocktails that have defined the decades.

1950s – MARTINI

Until de late 1950s, a Martini was nearly always made with gin, not vodka. Served ‘wet’ or ‘dry’, a wet Martini has more vermouth than a dry one. For ‘wet’, try a 1:5 or 1:10 ratio of gin to vermouth.

INGREDIENTSMartini Coctail Event Wedding Mallorca

  • 5-10ml dry white vermouth
  • 50ml London dry gin
  • Fresh ice
  • Lemon twist or green olive to garnish

METHOD

Pour vermouth into a chilled glass. Add gin to a mixing glass filled with ice and stir for 60 seconds. Strain through a sieve into the chilled vermouth. Garnish with a twist of lemon zest or green olive.

1960s – OLD FASHIONED

There is good evidence to suggest this drink was invented in late 1800s Kentucky, but it became most popular in the 1960s. Stirring allows the ice to melt and dilute the bourbon just enough.

INGREDIENTS

Old Fashioned Coctail Event Wedding Mallorca

  • 60ml bourbon
  • Fresh ice
  • 10ml sugar syrup
  • 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters

METHOD

Place half the bourbon in a glass with three ice cubes plus the sugar syrup and bitters. Stir for 15 seconds, then add two more cubes and the rest of the bourbon. Stir for a further 30-60 seconds.

1970s – MARGARITA

The Margarita was the drink of the 1970s. Esquire magazine’s 1973 Handbook for Hosts called it one of the ‘most useful of all drinks’. It must have a salt rim, otherwise it’s a Sour.

INGREDIENTSMargarita Coctail Event Wedding Mallorca

  • 40ml tequila
  • 20ml Cointreau
  • 20ml fresh lime juice
  • 5ml sugar or agave syrup
  • Powdered salt and a wedge of lime
  • Fresh ice

1980s – COSMOPOLITAN

It became famous in 1998 via Sex and the City, but the Cosmo started life on the West Coast in the 1980s. This version by mixologist Dale DeGroff at New York’s Rainbow Room is the best known.

INGREDIENTSCosmopolitan Coctail Event Wedding Mallorca

  • 45ml citron vodka
  • 15ml Cointreau
  • 30ml cranberry juice
  • 10ml fresh lime juice
  • Fresh ice
  • Orange zest to garnish

METHOD

Shake all the wet ingredients over ice in a shaker and strain into a cocktail glass. Fire up a lighter and hold it in front of the orange zest so its oils are released through the flame and over the glass.
